Alliance for Pharmacy Compounding
This presentation will present topical anti-infective usage as an adjuvant or replacement to systemic antibiotics and antifungals. There is a gap in the quality of studies and drug availability in general to discuss topical anti-infectives in the “commercially available” medication world. Time, effort, morbidity, mortality, and money may be saved in appropriate situations by delivering a topical agent.
Learning objectives for pharmacists and technicians:
1. List why a practitioner may choose topical anti-infectives instead of systemic
2. Describe normal flora versus pathogenic flora of the human skin system
3. List patient counseling considerations specific to topical anti-infectives
4. Describe antibiotic resistance, host factors, and biofilms that could lead to treatment failure
This lesson is a knowledge-based CE activity and is targeted to pharmacists and technicians.
