Traumatic brain injuries are unfortunately common in the pediatric population and result in significant morbidity and mortality. There are, however, a number of pharmacotherapy interventions which improve outcomes in the brain injured child. In this presentation, we will use the case of an injured child to explore some key pathophysiology which impacts medication therapy, describe effective employment of hyperosmolar and sedative therapies and consider some adjunctive medications which may be useful in these patients.

Learning Objectives for Pharmacists:
At the end of this session, participants will be able to:
1. Explain how the pathophysiology of traumatic brain injury impacts pharmacotherapy.
2. Employ intracranial pressure monitoring to guide pharmacotherapy of traumatic brain injury.
3. Make evidence-based recommendations for hyperosmolar therapy of traumatic brain injury.
4. Design analgesic, sedative and neuromuscular blockade therapy for the traumatic brain injury patient.
5. Recommend adjunctive medication therapy in traumatic brain injury
